Workshop description

Aims

This one-day workshop aims at bringing together people working on/with XML-based UIDLs and any person interested in describing and/or developing UIs with XML. It is expected that from this exchange of discussion, a better mutual understanding will be raised to enable people to work more closely on some UIDLs rather than reproducing the same efforts in multiple locations.

Objectives

The workshop will try to reach the following objectives:
  • To produce an up-to-date state of the art of UIDLs based on XML
  • To come up with a comparison of UIDLs in terms of goals, hypotheses, requirements, foundations, scope of the language, expressiveness of the language, modeling capabilities, range of obtainable UIs, tool support,...
  • To gather lessons learned, experience, and resources related to all existing UIDLs into one single place
  • To review open questions on XML-based UIDL
  • To better understand the scope and range of UIDLs by submitting some case studies to different UIDLs
  • To write a common document gathering questions, comparison, state of the art. A first draft of this document could be circulated prior to the workshop and it will be co-authored by all workshop participants

Call for Papers: Raising the Level of Abstraction of User Interface Specification with XML User Interface Description Languages
This special issue is dedicated to XML-based UI description languages. Topics of interest include:
  • New and innovative concepts in UIDLs.
  • UIDLs for describing novel UI types such as, but not limited to, pervasive UIs, multi-context UIs, rich internet applications, 3D UIs, UIs for mobile devices, UIs for ambient intelligence, and plastic UIs.
  • UIDLs supporting frameworks or particular development activities such as transformation techniques for UI development, model-driven architecture for UI and UI code generation.
  • Comparisons of UIDLs in terms of goals, hypotheses, requirements, foundations, scope of the language, expressiveness of the language, modeling capabilities, range of obtainable UIs, and tool support.
  • Lessons learned, industry experiences, and design issues in the conception and use of UIDL.

18 May 2004; Shuttle arrangements

The workshop participants should provide information of their departure time and location (Lecce or Brindisi) in order to schedule in advance the shuttle runs to Brindisi airport and to Lecce train station. If you did not do this already please make sure you have entered your departure information at the registration form, certainly when you are planning to leave the day after the workshop or sent them an email. We will ask again at the day of the workshop. More information is available at http://www.di.uniba.it/~avi2004/howtoreach.htm.

Hyperlinks are added to the list of accepted papers that provide more background information.

If you are curious what you will take home after the workshop, this is the book containing all the accepted papers.

28 April 2004; Standardization efforts

The OASIS User Interface Markup Language TC works on standardization of markup languages to describe user interfaces. As a follow-up activity of the workshop a BOF meeting will be held to discuss this standardization process. Workshop participants interested in the standardization effort are invited to join this meeting and share their ideas and views based on the workshop experiences.

13 April 2004; Overview accepted papers online

An overview of the accepted papers is available in the workshop program section. If you find any errors or missing information, send us an email. Instructions for participants and agenda will follow soon.
